Essays - Planning and Writing

Outcomes: This workshop is about developing useful strategies for answering assignments which involve writing an essay. It will cover scheduling your work over an extended period, getting started on the essay topic, planning, researching and structuring the essay, efficient drafting of your essay and producing a complete and accurate bibliography. If required, there will also be discussion of strategies for dealing with essay writing under examination conditions.

Michael, a Business IPOS student, after attending the workshop, realised that essay writing incorporates a lot of skills that he could improve - time management, reading, note-taking and referencing. He also commented that the tutor was very good - "he had lots of helpful tips and could give reasons why they were effective".

Nickki, a 1st year BSc Dietetics student, said that the workshop had helped her general approach to essay writing and gave her a better understanding of what was expected. "I learnt how important background stuff is, particularly the organisation and structure of an essay"
